Jimmy tibbs (trainer of Billy Joe Saunders)
I have ordered his book online, really colourful life he has led, even out side of training world champions.

Was involved heavily in the 1960's crime scence in the east end, The krays wanted to manage his career , and he was involved in a serious dispute , that culminated in his whole family doing some serious Bird.

He has now found God, but seems Cool with it, and when seeing him interviewed recently he seems like a top fella, and listening to Billy joe, in the corner in fright night, he has the utmost respect for him, and executed Jimmy game plan to a tee.

Does anyone have any opinions on Jimmy, or relevant experiences , im looking forward to the book arriving, he seems like a real good character.

Me and a few mates flew up to Glasgow for the fight Mitchell had with Burns.on the way back we were waiting to board the plane when who should be in the queue in font of us? Kevin Mitchell and Jimmy tibbs.we found our seats and couldn't believe it when Jimmy sat next to us.Anyway we had a good chat for about an hour and he told us a few stories of his years in the fight game.I only had an hour of his company but from that I realised he is a Top Top bloke.

I was in the Black Boy pub in Stepney, when Tibbsy paid the landlord and Lenny Kersey who used to live the next street to me (Bingley Rd Custom House) a visit, apparently Lenny had called Tibbsy a pikey, place got smashed up, we got out sharpish.
Then a bomb got placed under Tibbsy's car in East Ham it went off but Tibbs and his 4 year old were not in the car when it went off.
Lenny was attacked with an axe and knives in Mile End and ended up with 180 stitches.
Not nice times, by the way the barmaid in the Black Boy at the time was Anita Dobson of Eastenders except these episodes were real and not drama

What happened to Tibbs's son that used to fight out of WHB's?? My cousin (Pete Weekes) used to be there at the same time... told us there was high hopes for him (late 80's?)

Charley.
That's a typical East End story for them times.

We used to go in the a Black Boy (a few years after that though, like a lot of others on here). We all lived round Stepney. Sounds about right for all the tear ups etc. even years later!)
Me old mans Bethnal green and he said Tibbsy and that tried to start a barney in the Greyhound one night (after the twins had gone away) for the protection, but they got knocked back by the guvnor (think me old man said the Osbornes, (who had oi cockle sheds at Leigh on sea)).
Then I s'pose it all came on top and hmp beckoned.

As someone said, Tibbsy now 'born again' and he trains BJS up me cousin's gym.

My misses old man was involved in taking over the 1st protection racket after the Krays went away he also told me before it come out that BOTH the Krays were gay and liked young YOUNG boys.

He done a lot of time inside.

The racket invloving the tibbs came along not long after.

For anybody who has read it does he say that the reason he parted company with Nigel Benn was because he turn't to Paul Mckenna's hynopherapy which is a no go for Christians. Doe's he mention the Drum and Monkey, East Ham.

Seems strange looking back how mad the East End was and yet didn't seem to get frightened by it, just needed your head down and your gob shut and let them get on with it and amazing if anything was going down you would hear the whispers beforehand and the pub would empty.
Regularly drank round Bethnal Green and Stepney can't remember the names of all the pubs but there were loads within a square mile. Carpenters Arms, Jug House Ben Johnson Rd, fish and ring Kate Hodders. Some good times but violence was rife with gangs settling scores within the East End and from them over the water.
I won't subscribe to the myth the streets were safer, but generally speaking am amazed that bystanders never got caught up in it all.

Lovely family. Nice Dad and he's a real gentleman. (some of that may not be true) I knew him, from when he was about 12.

Charleyfarley.

Especially if certain 'faces' were involved, you'd give it a wide berth.

Couldn't have put it better myself. You've hit the nail on the head.
It was just how it was. Word of mouth. No iPhones!
And it all stood us in good stead (as we're not phased by any violent situations/the bravado yoof of today and are usually one step ahead anyway).
As for the boozers, me and one of me mates are currently trying to get now and then photos of the East End pubs to bring it right up to date. (There's f......g loads! It's surprising).
Our local by the way was the Astric Lodge.

(The Old Globe/Black Boy were the main focus for everyone on Fri/Sat though).

Re: Jimmy tibbs (trainer of Billy Joe Saunders)
Yes, percyd, I am. JT was two, or three years younger than me. Same year as my younger brother, as I remember. I bumped into him a lot, a few years later, when I was hanging around the east end boozers.
He was never a mate, but would always say hello. Apart from the pubs, we lived in different worlds. He hung around with the mob and the fight crowd; I was mates with musicians and footballers.
